Deranged scribbles or modern art?

(Published on 14. August 2024, 14:35 by bboom)

This is the first puzzle in a series of puzzles I'm making, exploring the anti-bishop/anti-knight mechanic.

If you want to try the mechanic in a simple puzzle first, I've created this simple practice puzzle that doesn't use any other special rules.

Puzzle rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Odd anti-knight: Cells separated by a knight’s move in chess cannot have the same odd digit.
  • Even anti-bishop: Cells separated by a bishop’s move in chess cannot have the same even digit.
  • Palindrome lines: Digits on a red line read the same forwards and backwards.
  • German whisper lines: Two cells connected by a green line must have a difference of at least 5.
  • Region sum line: Digits on the blue line have an equal sum within each box it passes through.

This puzzle is part of a series I'm making, exploring the odd anti-knight / even anti-bishop mechanic. Other puzzles in the series can be found here:

  1. First Practice
  2. Deranged scribbles or modern art?
  3. Knight and Bishops, dancing around dots
  4. Anti-Knight and Anti-Bishop Killer
  5. Bishops eat their sandwiches at 5:29
  6. Minimalist art or more deranged scribbles?
  7. Directionless Knights and Bishops
  8. Scribbled art in deranged colors

Solution code: Row 7 (9 digits, no spaces)

that was fun, took me three attempts because I always ended up skipping into a different diagonal (funny enough always ending up with a unresolvable 4or6 on the german whisper in box 8) haven't seen the easier path on R5C2 until the last rerun
Great puzzle, thanks a lot!

Awesome puzzle!!! I put off coloring for the longest time because I didn't want to juggle all my different color systems, but it solved pretty smooth after I worked that out :-)

Very nice art indeed and fun technique to combine the series oriented rules with the palindrome in this one

If this is a 3-star puzzle, then the people who solved it are much more genius than me. Thoroughly engaging. Would never have known how to start this a few years ago.

I must have started this puzzle over about 5 times but I finally figured out where to put my letters to derive the most squares. Coloring/letter puzzles are my favorite and I loved the logic that stemmed from the even/odd rules!

I absolutely loved it! Took me forever to get my first digit and I loved every minute of making the deductions it took for my first digit and the second I got that digit the puzzle beautifully wounded up in a very elegant way

Great puzzle. Made a lot of progress before I realized a much simpler way of figuring out which digits were odd or even. Very fun!

The odd/even restraint difference was quite interesting, had to keep track of it.
