Good Neighbours Become Good Friends (Parity Stars/Numbered Rooms)

(Published on 17. July 2025, 22:32 by damo_89)

Another parity shading puzzle with Numbered Rooms to disambiguate the digits. Consensus testing estimate was 2 to 3 stars. I am going to initially plump for 3 but won't be surprised if this is considered a bit more approachable. Good luck!

  • Normal sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1 to 9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box
  • Parity Stars: A cell contains a star if all its (up to 4) orthogonal neighbours are the same odd-even parity as the digit in the star. ALL stars are given
  • Numbered Rooms: Clues outside the grid give the digit to be placed in the Nth cell in that row or column, where N is the digit in the first cell
  • NB: The parity stars only apply within the 9x9 grid, so a parity star on a border does not say anything about that row's numbered room clue

Numbered Room Example: If you are new to numbered rooms they can look a bit intimidating. This image should clarify how they work. The 3 in R1C1 is saying to place 7 in the 3rd position, i.e. R1C3. The 6 in R1C9 is saying to place the 9 in the 6th position, i.e. R1C4. The 2 in R1C5 is saying to place 8 in the 2nd position, i.e. R2C5.

Solution code: Row 6
