Rules: Killer Sudoku rules would apply, except seven ate nine. Allegedly.
This puzzle is part of my April Fools series. You can find my other puzzles here. Mind you, this is a lot simpler than most of the others. I was just inspired by juggler to create a puzzle with a 10-word ruleset. His is a masterpiece.
Edit: Thanks to ghaia’s keen eye, I discovered that the Wicked Witch has been playing tricks with this puzzle! Usually I would rush to fix any such nuisances, but I found this one quite funny, and funny is what April Fools is all about, so I’m going to keep it. This has suddenly become a Choose Your Own Adventure sudoku. Want a quick solve? Play the puzzle as it appears in SudokuPad. Enjoy a bit of a challenge? Then play it as it shows in the above image. It’s exactly the same except that the 7-cage in column 8 has mysteriously vanished! Poor 7…. What did the Wicked Witch do to you?!
Lösungscode: Row 5, read left to right (9 digits without spaces)

I appreciate the rules elaboration in the comments. My initial assumption was that 9 had been subtracted from each clue, rather than it being a 0-8 puzzle. I don't think I would've figured it out myself, just gotten stuck and gone onto another puzzle.

Reply by Lorena: Thanks a lot for the feedback! I’m glad that didn’t happen.

This was a fun puzzle. I also enjoyed the little story at the end. :)

Reply by Lorena: Thank you! The story is my favourite part.

I GOT YOU!!! YOU'RE NOT FOOLIN ME, OH NO! I was so happy when I understood the gimmick in the first 30 seconds of the puzzle, but that did not take away from the fun of it. I was so paranoid about the cages on columns 8 and 9 for the longest time, I knew you wouldn't leave 'em alone :) Overall an easy puzzle, especially in comparison to your other ones, one star diff from me :)
Also, the completion message is hilarious. I love it so much, and the puns are hilarious.
Though I cannot help and ask myself whether the completion message lies, and 7 was framed by yourself, miss Lorena :)

Oooh I’m so happy that you enjoyed the completion message! It’s my favourite part of the puzzle! Sorry for making you paranoid about the SOS, but hey, I even mention in the description that this puzzle is on the simpler side for my April Fools series, so I had to mess with your heads somehow!
-----
And mess with us you did! though I meant moreso the 4 vertical cages, but the SOS was also in the back of my mind for a while! For a simple puzzle with a 10-word ruleset, it's super impressive!
-----
edit 2 because I was looking at the puzzle again, there's a missing cage in the image of the puzzle in LMD, don't know if that's very relevant but worth pointint out, I think.
——
Reply by Lorena: Oh, wow, good catch!! I need to check but I believe that the image is right and it’s the puzzle itself that is wrong!! I mean, not wrong wrong, but that cage was unnecessary so I removed it. I’m gonna go check and change whatever needs changing. What a keen eye! Wanna be my tester? ;)
P.S: After checking, I’ve decided to keep both xD
------
Oh! I wouldn't have thought the 7 cage would be unnecesary! Good on you for keeping both, way funnier and in line with April Fools, just like we like it :)

I was fooled by the SOS, started the whole thing with a 7 in that cell of the 9 cage, painted myself in the corner immediately, then started again with a more usual approach. I enjoyed having to figure out the riddle, and think it is sad that it got explicited in the comments. Thanks for this puzzle and the whole series.

Reply by Lorena: Ah, I love experiencing the duality of man in the form of a comment thread in a sudoku puzzle. Thank you for your comment, it was lovely as usual.

This was a really nice puzzle. But being vague in the rules is not appropriate here because there already exists a "7 ate 9" variant where normally an adjacent 7 means that a 9 has value 0. So in my opinion, specifying you wanted the digits from 0 to 8 being used was necessary. Thank you for this fun puzzle, Lorena!

What precisely does "seven ate nine" mean?
——
Reply by Lorena: It is my opinion that being precise makes this puzzle way less fun, but I acknowledge that this may not be the case for everyone so, since you asked, precisely, it means that the grid contains no 9s, and it is instead comprised of the digits 0-8.
——
Thank you. Other versions of "seven ate nine" have 7 = (9+7) = 16 and 9 = 0, though the 15 cage makes this impossible.
——
Reply by Lorena: But in this case 7 was framed!! I’ve now changed the rules to make that more obvious.
I was talking to juggler about why some people might not like this puzzle and I realized that it is because it is a sudoku and a riddle. Maybe you like sudoku, maybe you even like riddles, but a riddle in your sudoku can still be jarring, like a pickle in your ice-cream. So actually I should thank you for having given me the opportunity to depickle the ice-cream in the comments.
