Cells connected by an V must sum to 5.
The green dots are either X or V.
All X's and V's are given.
Cells connected by an blue square must sum to 7.
All blue squares are given.

The ruleset is not quite clear. Do the two green dots need to be both 5 or 10, or can they be different?

hmm, coloring the blue squares with 3 different colors should be easy. after that avoid 2 of the same colors touching where they not allowed, then think about 7,8 and 9, after that you should be able to test some options for the green dots and be on the way to solving... and ofc don't forget negative constraints on the X and V's..
and if 3 colors is not enough you can use letters to seperate all the possible 1-6

Rookie,
I highly recommend coloring. I personally use green w dark grey, yellow w light gray, purple with blue and red w orange (when there are a lot of XVs). Color and use the negative restrictions to limit where colors can go in certain boxes, rows or columns. You may have to "guess" using color to see if it will work, especially when you have two options for a box. Eventually, the coloring will usually end at a point where there is a kropki or thermo that will allow you to get one digit or one X or V pair and the whole thing will resolve itself very quickly. Start on the easiest ones to get comfortable and you'll be solving in no time.

for some reason, I have a very hard time solving these XVII puzzles... any suggestions?

Thank you NurglesGift and PinkNickels for your suggestions! I am quite familiar with coloring and lettering, the greatest hurdle is the correlation of XVIIs with Xs and Vs. I'll try to figure it out now!
