Jet Lag (Dynamic Fog of War, Chaos Construction)

(Eingestellt am 6. Dezember 2024, 04:21 Uhr von DubiousMobius)

This puzzle was inspired, in equal measure, by Helipolix's Delirium and Chilly's Paths Through the Mist!. It's also a continuation of my series of puzzles with non-toroidal tiling. These puzzles always seem to come with many edge cases and rule clarifications so I hope you won't be scared off by the long ruleset. If you'd like practice with the novel rules in a much more forgiving setting, I have a sample puzzle here to get you familiar without Chaos Construction layered on top.

I want to give a big thanks to Aqjhs and Kyunitar, whose thorough testing made this puzzle possible.

Rules:

Chaos Construction Sudoku: Create 9 orthogonally connected 9-cell regions each containing the digits 1-9. Digits may not repeat in any row, column, or region. Regions may wrap around the border of grid.

Digits may not repeat along the indicated diagonal.
White dots separate cells with consecutive digits.

Quesadilla Grid: The grid has been folded across its positive diagonal so that its western and southern edges are adjacent, and its northern and eastern edges are also adjacent. This is reflected in the border coloring.

One way to visualize this is to imagine pivoting the grid around the SW and NE corners by 90 degrees in each direction.

Passport Arrows: A digit with an arrow counts the number of region borders that it will cross by traveling in a straight line in the indicated direction before it returns to its home region. It does not count its final border crossing into the home region.

For example, if an arrow's path moves from region A ⮕ B ⮕ A, its cell will contain a 1, and if it moves from region A ⮕ B ⮕ C ⮕ B ⮕ A, it will contain a 3.

If a cell contains multiple arrows, each individual arrow's path will meet the above criteria.

If an arrow reaches the edge of the grid, it will continue out from its paired edge with its direction rotated 90 degrees.

An arrow that travels diagonally into the NE or SW corner will return the way it came, counting the borders it crossed a second time (but not counting its final crossing into its home region). An arrow traveling into the NW or SE corner will wrap the quesadilla corner by moving to the diagonally opposite corner and continue in the direction it was moving.

Dynamic Fog of War: The grid is partially covered in fog. In this puzzle, placing a correct digit in a cell will always lift the fog in that cell, and may also lift the fog elsewhere in the grid. Placing correct digits in the moat will have no effect.

The blank space outside the 9x9 grid is available for taking notes, but doesn't need to be filled to trigger answer check. Click here to play!

Lösungscode: The digit visited by by the r1c9 arrow immediately after each of its border crossings (not including its final crossing home).

Loved this puzzle, which combined some of my favorite rules! Very difficult for me to keep track of how to maneuver the corners of the quesadilla grid, which certainly made it more fun.

Wonderful, brain-melting puzzle. Thank you for the matching edge colors for the topographically-challenged amongst us.

What a wild, challenging puzzle! I spent a long time and barely managed it, but it was very cool to see how it came together.

I think I'm meant to eat quesadillas rather than to imagine reflecting paths along their cheesy edges :)
