Fog of Where?

(Eingestellt am 20. November 2024, 17:53 Uhr von jwsinclair)

Fog of Where?, by James Sinclair

Fog works differently in this puzzle. *Some* correctly-entered digits clear fog from certain cells, but those cells may be in other parts of the grid. Other digits, even when entered correctly, do not clear fog at all. When the puzzle is fully solved, all the fog will be cleared.

Normal sudoku rules apply, and all clues are standard.
Killer cages: the sum of the digits inside each cage is equal to the small number in the top left corner, and digits cannot repeat within a cage.
Arrows: the sum of the digits along an arrow is equal to the digit in the connected circle, and these digits can repeat if allowed by other rules. Arrows do not cross or overlap, and all arrow sums are single-digit.
Digits in cells separated by an X sum to 10.
Digits in cells with a shaded square must be even.
Digits in cells separated by a white dot are consecutive.
Digits in cells separated by a black dot have a 1:2 ratio.

SudokuPad

Thanks so much to SudokuPad developer Sven Neumann for making this possible. This is definitely the tip of the iceberg for this concept, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what other folks can do with it :)

Note: the link above is to an alpha version of SudokuPad, so some settings may be different from what you are used to. There may also be bugs (although I'm pretty sure all the major issues have been worked out), so if something isn't working, let me know, and I'll pass it on to Sven.

Found this much more difficult than a 1*. Took me 68 minutes - I kept messing up my colouring and probably did too much... Still a great puzzle though.

Wow, this was great! The lack of revealing from the fog really made me question whether some answers were accurate and resulted in more questioning where the next step was.

Thank you for this nice puzzle, dear jwsinclair! It was very exciting! :)

Really enjoyable puzzle. It flows smoothly. This new type of fog makes it super obvious to know on what to focus next. And this variety of sudoku variants made it really flavourful.
Time: just sub 30 min

Can't wait to see this concept combined with that fog rule change reveal puzzle combined with an irregular grid hidden by the fog lol

Just about the perfect puzzle to introduce this concept! This has certainly given me plenty of ideas. :)

How can one puzzle be so frustrating, so amusing and so satisfying?

Fun puzzle, and I can see the mechanic being much more widely used. Well done James and especially Sven!

Interesting and at first irritating, when nothing happens by putting in a correct digit. Looking forward to to see more of these random-fog puzzles.
PS: that one arrow is vicious

A delightful innovation. Can't wait to learn how to implement it through f-puzzles, sudoku maker, or whatever interface Sven uses to set directly in SudokuPad. (Three cheers for Sven!) And, of course, three cheers for James.

I love how this forces you to extract everything possible from the available logic before the fog will clear and let you move on. Really interesting new concept. I can’t wait to see more of this.

am 22. November 2024, 00:07 Uhr von samuel1997
This is a brilliant idea! This also disallows solvers to wild guess because you never know whether the digit is correct even if no fog is cleared!

am 21. November 2024, 23:51 Uhr von aqefwf
What an interesting idea, makes you think, why someone couldn't do it for so long and it appeared only now. But to actually come up with it and make one - that's what hard, great job, eager to see this mechanic in future as more sudoku will appear

I always cite you as my go-to example of how its possible to make really fresh and interesting puzzles using standard and familiar constraints. But I really loved seeing this bit of very cool format innovation - you're right, it definitely is going places! I was solving the puzzle whilst also imagining all the possibilities it brings

Thank you for this very nice puzzle, jwsinclair! I loved the new fog mechanic, although I have to admit I intially was very anxious when correct digits did not lift additional fog. :D
Thank you for this great innovation!

That was really enjoyable. Not very hard but looking for the next puzzle was fun and the new fog effect works really well. It was a little worrying at times when I though I was correct and nothing happened, but it was good fun.

Outstanding puzzle. The FoW twist here is incredibly well done, delivering surprises throughout. The logic was well balanced and exceptionally interesting for a 2 star. Simon will get a kick out of this one! Thank you!

Interesting. Certainly opens up a lot of possibilities in terms of setting. Curious to see how this will catch on. Very nice showcase of the mechanic!

LOL. I am wondering why I was really stuck with no visible solving path for so long. Turns out the link is for alpha. I had use redirector for all alpha.sudokupad.app to sudokupad.app. If anyone else stuck and having this problem, simply turn off the redirector

Fun fog twist - makes fog setting easier to control for sure. I can make puzzles using this that were not possible under the old mechanic without giving too much away.

What a lovely puzzle. It was a little nerve wracking when several digits revealed no fog but it was a very enjoyable one to solve. This new fog feature is going to be used a lot I feel. Can’t wait!

am 21. November 2024, 10:05 Uhr von tmokonen
What a mindbleep! I was questioning myself throughout the puzzle because of no fog clearance, but the stress was for naught. It turned out to be a fun and approachable solve in the end, with a couple of humorous twists. Even the wonky conflict checker somehow added to the thrill. Really should take those conflict checker training wheels off.

am 21. November 2024, 09:46 Uhr von faltenin
That was really enjoyable with an extra stress factor having cells NOT reveal, inducing a moment of "wait, was that right?". It does allow for interesting paths that don't have to grow from the current cell.

am 21. November 2024, 07:02 Uhr von softie
Fantastic. Thank you to James and thank you to Sven for making this possible! This solves my biggest frustrations with FOW puzzles, which are accidental spoilers and being told you broke it before you can discover that on your own. This variation enables the fog without giving away the answer. LOVE IT!

am 21. November 2024, 05:39 Uhr von ZigZagWonderer
Just brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Thank you!

What a great variation. Thanks!

am 21. November 2024, 01:37 Uhr von konjecture
I LOVE Fog of War puzzles, but I do believe that at some point the original variation reveals too much of the puzzle. This allows for delayed cluing which I think is great. Also, I love the idea of the puzzle not giving me immediate feedback on every step.

This is a brilliant invention.

am 21. November 2024, 01:29 Uhr von sacklunch
Loved this new dynamic! Imagine if other types of actions could be triggered by entering correct digits in the grid. Some of our fiendishly delightful constructors could have a lot of fun with altering clues on the fly! Renbans moving through the grid like snakes… digits in quad clues appearing and disappearing… wrogn clues becoming right…. lines changing color and meaning… Finkz navigating Marty’s mazes on her own… :)

Fantastic puzzle, that wonderfully showcases the new fog mechanism! Really enjoyed it!

This takes on a whole new way of dealing with fog and gives constructors much more flexibility in setting fog puzzles. Thank you so much to Sven for making it possible, and for James and others who came up with Proof of Concept puzzles to give Sven the incentive to make it real.

What a weird twist on fog mechanic, yet it feels like it offers much more suspense and surprising factors than the 'original way'. Thanks for the smile x)
