Through the Looking Glass (Kropki and XV pairs sudoku)

(Published on 10. November 2024, 19:15 by Qodec)

Inspired by a recent puzzle called Kropki Numerals by Sotehr.

  • Sudoku: Each row, column, and region indicated by thick borders in the grid must contain the digits 1 to 9 once each.
  • Kropki and XV pairs: Digits separated by an X add up to 10. Digits separated by a V add up to 5. If digits are separated by a black dot, one is double the other. Digits separated by a white dot are consecutive. Not all possible dots or X/V clues are necessarily given.

You can play this puzzle online using Sudokupad: https://sudokupad.app/s0l233wyqx

Solution code: Rows 1 and 9. I.e. the 9 digits in row 1 from left to right, followed by the 9 digits in row 9 from left to right, for example: 123456789123456789

This feels like the standard for a sudoku that might appeal to all levels of solvers. The logic is incredibly elegant to satisfy experienced solvers, while also being accessible to novice ones who are looking to stretch their limits.

Absolutely beautiful puzzle. I found it EXTREMELY difficult and almost resorted to trial and error before finally having an epiphany that made it possible to make progress, and from there on it was reasonably steady until finished. I'm very very impressed. It's not often you see such a beautiful puzzle with such a subtle break of symmetry.

don't know if i've ever done a puzzle that's so evenly paced throughout. I'm sure that pace is different for everyone, but it felt like a sequence of steps that were of a similar difficulty, but consistently different logic.

There must be some neat logic that I'm missing bc I found the mid-game break-in particularly difficult to spot.

Beautiful puzzle, but not at all easy for me. Broke it a couple of times and had to back track. All the deductions felt hard-won, but also very fair, and at times extremely elegant. Many thanks

Thank you for this fantastic puzzle, Qodec! The grid looks so sparse, but it resolves as smoothly one could dream of. Starting off felt harder, but it became quite approachable once I started asking the right questions. Gorgeous set-up!

So many neat and juicy interactions throughout! I found this one quite more consistent than casual 3* there.
