RAT RUN 13: Triskaidekaphilia

- Normal sudoku rules apply.
- AIM OF EXPERIMENT: Finkz the rat must reach the cupcake by finding a path through the maze. The path must not visit any cell more than once, cross itself, or pass through any thick maze walls.
- As well as moving orthogonally, Finkz may move diagonally if there's a 2x2 space in which to do so, but may never pass diagonally through a round wall-spot on the corner of a cell.
- NULLIFIERS: In each row, column and 3x3 box there is one 'nullifier' cell to be located. The value of a nullifier cell is zero. Each nullifier cell contains a different digit.
- MOTION SENSORS: The value on a pink motion sensor indicates how many of the (up to 9) cells immediately surrounding the sensor are visited by Finkz. The sensor itself is counted, if visited.
- BLACKCURRANTS: Values connected by a blackcurrant have a 1:2 ratio.
- GRAPES: Values connected by a green grape have a difference of at least 5.
- FORBIDDEN DOORS: Values connected by a red X sum to 10. Finkz may not pass directly through a red X.
- TEST CONSTRAINT: In this experiment, if a row / column / box is visited by Finkz, then the values of ALL the visited cells in that row / column / box must sum to exactly 13 (even if the cells aren't all adjacent on the path.)

My first ever 4 star puzzle, and it's a Rat Run! This series has done so much for getting me accustomed to harder puzzles by organizing them around a familiar theme. I <3 Finkz.

This one was hard but I was pleased with how quickly I got the break-in so I managed to get through it quicker than I first thought. Pure genius puzzle!

The hardest of the series for me, by far. But very very enjoyable once I started to make some inroads. Very nice. And after reading the rules, i expected to see a couple of specific things and you did not disappoint

I've done all the rat run puzzles so far and It's the best series of puzzles I've seen...This one took me so long to get right but it's so satisfying as always.

Over 2 hours for me but I enjoyed every minute of it. Even the evil part in the bottom left. I didn‘t have Triskaidekaphilia before, but now I‘m not so sure. As usual Finks did her thing and found her way much easier than I did. What a brilliant construction. Thanks Marty.

I kept missing two cells that had poked their head into a box, convincing me that my path was broken. I stuck at it for a long, long time... and finally had the facepalm moment spotting the two cells that had been there the whole time. Fabulous puzzle!

Wonderful puzzle, as always in the Rat Run series.
At least for me it was the most difficult one so far. Took me 293 minutes (according to Sudokupad) over several sessions. I've given up several times, certain that there was no way to deduce the next step.
The interaction of the rules was awesome; especially in the evil motion sensor in the bottom left...

Brilliant as always! The scanning for the 13 rule was quite difficult for me, so it took me a some time, but it is an ingenious rule. Also, I'm so glad that motion sensors are back!

The message at the end informs me how quickly Finkz knew what to do, unfortunately Finkz didn't pass this information on to me. Took me ages like normal with the guidance of solution check but I enjoy them to much to pass on despite being beyond my natural ability.

Hurrah for more rat run! I like the path-building in this one a lot and the nullifiers added some interesting hiccups to consider.

In high school we did a book triskaidekaphobia and we did the breakdown on the meaning of the word, so when I read this title weeks ago I had a theory of this experiments aim was going to be and have been awaiting it.
Marty: that is interesting! Was it along the lines of what you were thinking?
vorash; I was thinking more ten line style of constraint rather than column/row/box but I liked that I was simultaneously right about the theme and wrong too.
Marty: Haha, originally I was going to do a ten-line style puzzle but with 13 instead. But was finding it hard to constrain that enough. So I started thinking of other ideas that could use the number 13. An excellent puzzle by Jobo called 'row sum lines' is what inspired this idea for me.
