Dutch Flat Mates (Circuit Boards)

(Eingestellt am 27. November 2024, 11:30 Uhr von Flinty)

Initial Setter Difficulty: 3/5

Normal Sudoku rules apply
Place the digits 1-9 so that they do not repeat in any row, column, or 3x3 box.

Dutch Flats
Every 5 in the grid must have a '1' directly above it or a '9' directly below it. It may have both, but it doesn't need both.

Circuit Boards
Digits at the endpoints of each gold or silver line are the same as each other (i.e R3C2 is the same digit as R2C5) and the value indicates exactly how many unique digits are on that line.

Special Thanks
This puzzle was inspired by Circuit Board by Jaze. Which you can see Simon from CTC solve here.

More guest setters are on the way!
The next 2 weeks see the return of Damo_89 with Double Arrows, and Black_Doom making his Flat Mates debut with Chinese Whispers.

Once you have solved the puzzle, there is a hidden LMD comment that provides the link to a YouTube video where I give a short insight into this puzzle. Big thanks to Palpot for humouring my rework of the final clue, along with helping me look at many different versions.

Hint to start

The digits in the middle row of box 2 is the intended break-in. Using the fact that ends of lines are the same digit.

Hint for later

Unique digits is the issue for the longest line, and finding a home for enough digits on the line.

Example Puzzle
Small example image, covering the basics of the rules.
The gold line has 4 unique digits (1245), with 4 on each end.
The silver line has 3 unique digits (367), with 3 on each end.

There's going to be the day I solve one of these puzzles and won't be stuck for 10 minutes having forgotten about the DFM constraint. But it wasn't today. Don't know what it's exactly about this rule that always makes me forget. Fun puzzle though. Also thanks for the hint on that copy button.

Lovely puzzle, as always. I haven't done circuit boards before, so it took me some time, but it worked really well and felt good to solve.
Also, thanks a bunch for the video (and the copy/paste PSA)!

Flinty: Thank you, and you are welcome. :)

Great puzzle. You eventually run into a wall if you forget about the dutch flat mates constraint.

Flinty: Thanks, I think - haha. :)
