Physics 201: Meteorology

(Eingestellt am 8. Oktober 2024, 01:51 Uhr von 99%Sneaky)

Intro:

A big step up in difficultly from Physics 101. You're really going to have to work to earn an A this time so you'd do well not to show up late for class.

Rules:

#1 Normal sudoku rules apply.
#2 Digits in a cage sum to the small number printed in the corner. Digits may not repeat within cages.
#3 Digits along an arrow sum to the digit in the attached circle. Digits may repeat on arrows if allowed by other rules.

#4 Hailstorm: Blue squares represent a hail chunk. All hail falls vertically in the column in which it appears and reaches row 9 after a whole number of seconds. The digits in the first cell below and to the right of a hail cell give the speed (in blocks per second) at which it falls and time (in seconds) it will continue falling before reaching row 9. These two digits may be placed in either order.

For example, a hail chunk appearing in R4C1 would lead to R4C2 and R5C1 containing the digits 1 and 5 (for the hails speed and time respectively) in some order. This would illustrate that the chunk would move downward at 1 block per second for 5 seconds and successfully reach row 9 after a whole number of seconds had passed.

Who would’ve thought that a hailstorm could move so subtly and intricately! What an absolutely superb setup, where just about everything needed for a unique solution is required right at the start (hopefully not a spoiler; I think the ruleset makes this clear by itself anyway). I have to agree myself with the difficulty estimate though, as despite things going super smoothly once past the opening, the opening itself is really intricate and requires a lot of works and subtle deductions, some of which really weren’t immediately obvious to me. Anyway, major kudos for setting this!

Slightly confusing way to portray the rule, but I understand that's for your theme, but once understood it unfolded to some really nice logic.

Thanks for your comment :)
Yes I understand the rule is a bit cumbersome, it was written at the time I set my first sudoku puzzle, re: Physics 101.

Correct rules and changed link to include the corrected rules.

Nice puzzle. I solved it assuming digits must not repeat in cages. Which wasn't specified in the rules. You might want to update the rules.
