A Map to Distant Lands

(Published on 23. August 2024, 18:11 by The Book Wyrm)

This is a set of 3 puzzles of increasing size and difficulty, which uses the Doppelganger ruleset created by Kafkapharnaum. The aim with these puzzles was to have as many of the clues as possible in the tracker cells rather than the actual grid.

Rules:

  • DOPPELGANGER (9x9 version)
    - Every row, column, and box contains the digit 0 always, as well as three (/five/eight) out of the four (/six/nine) digits from 1 to 4 (/6/9) (ie, it's missing one digit that is not 0)
    - No two row, no two column, and no two box may be missing the same digit
    - For each 0 in the grid, the digits missing in its row, its column, and its box must be three different digits
    - The cells outside the grid must filled in with the digits that are missing from the corresponding row/column/region.
  • COORDINATE ARROWS
Digits on an arrow spell out the coordinates (in the main grid) for the digit that is their sum. The row number is written on the start of the arrow, the column number is written on the arrow tip. If for example an arrow looks like this: -1 4-> then there must be a 5 in r1c4. All the arrows must correspond to different coordinates. Digits may repeat on an arrow if allowed by other rules. 0 may not appear on an arrow.
  • ODD CIRCLES
Digits in a grey circle must be odd.

Very nice set of puzzles with countless beautiful deductions along the way! What a great idea! I spent just as much time on the 6x6 as the 9x9 because I hadn't hadn't read the rules carefully about different arrows corresponding to different coordinates, but interestingly the 6x6 can be nearly solved without that condition and was highly enjoyable. Thanks a lot for this gem!

What a pleasure that one of my favourite genre of puzzles is back. And so extraordinary well created! The coordinate arrow part was far the more difficult one (and a good introduction for those who want to try Kafka's puzzles with zero as part of the coordinates ...). I hope that you will create more with this ruleset!

An absolutely outstanding set of 3 puzzles, with such a clean looking grid each time. Each puzzle ramps up in difficulty with new and interesting deductions each time. Loved it.

Nothing short of an absolute tour de force – right up from the 4x4 and the 6x6, as the progression of the pack as a whole is in itself a high point, and certainly made for me a much smoother experience with the 9x9 than I expected. The conciseness of the clues is both extremely impressive in itself AND useful in targeting the key spots. Plus of course, I’m super happy just to see the ruleset being used in such a grand manner, so double thanks for setting this and sharing it here! :D

so memorable in many ways, also very cool way to introduce the theory of the Doppelganger ruleset
