Bosnian Whisper

(Published on 19. August 2024, 00:41 by Calesch)

SudokuPad

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply: place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and box.

Bosnian Road:
Make a 1-cell-wide loop of orthogonally connected cells, which does not branch or touch itself - not even diagonally.
Circled cells cannot be on the loop, and the digit in a circle indicates how many of the up to 8 surrounding cells are on the loop.

German whisper:
Adjacent digits along the loop must differ by at least 5.

Solution code: Digits on the loop in rows 7 and 8 (no spaces)

@SolidTux In your example, A and B are touching orthogonally. Do you object to that also?

Apply a little common sense. If a simple corner was counted as the loop touching itself diagonally, it would be impossible to draw any kind of loop at all.

The idea is that different sections of the loop aren't allowed to bump into each other. Even if they only barely touch corner to corner, that's still not allowed.

I have yet to solve this, but I find the "diagonally touching" confusing as don't get, what this means. Wouldn't this mean that it's not allowed to make corners at all, which would make a loop impossible?

For example in a grid of

ABC
OOD
OOE

With part of the loop going A->B->C->D->E, wouldn't B and D touch diagonally?
--------------------
The rule about touching itself is about sections of the loop as a whole, rather than individual cells.

For example, here is a loop (the O's) that touches itself diagonally (r2c3 and r3c4):

X X O O O X
X O O X O X
O O X O O X
O X X O X X
O O O O X X

--------------------

Why is this different from r1c4 and r2c5 and other corners? Is the rule that the touching parts of the loop have to have a distance of >2 along the loop?

I really found the break in hard as I just couldn't see how the ruleset and givens could interact enough to get a solve, but this was the only puzzle I had downoaded for a two hour flight so I couldn't give up. Once I kept pushing the tiny little deductions it all revealed itself and flowed so nicely. One of my favorite

I‘m not at all a loop expert - but this all fell into place as natural as you could possibly wish for. Spectacular setting, especially taking into account how little information was given!
