A Dingo Ate My Cages (Build Your Own Kangaroos)

(Published on 6. August 2024, 18:18 by purpl)

These kangaroos are slightly DIFFERENT to the previous puzzle, Pumped. I wanted to make a build your own cages puzzle with the same rules as Pumped, but I did not feel that it was as compelling as I had hoped. However, after accidentally experimenting with a ruleset where neither group of cells can touch one another, I realized this alteration could put on enough pressure to make the build your own cages a reality. Even with this pressure, the puzzle put up an incredible fight and I felt like a dingo really did eat my last brain cell by the end.

Rules:

Normal sudoku rules apply.

These kangaroos need to grow! Each kangaroo consists of orthogonally connected cells that can be split into two orthogonally connected groups of non-repeating digits. Each group sums to the same total, some of these totals are given.

One group, which must have less digits, is the Roo whereas the group with more digits is the Kanga. Roo cells from different kangaroos never touch orthogonally and same for Kanga cells.

There are no extra kangaroos, all are given by the starting clues.

Here is an example visual which uses the same rules where brown represents the Kanga cells and green represents the Roo cells (just for illustration, not solvable):

I enjoyed the previous version of the rules so I gave it a try. This puzzle was as beautiful as it was exhausting (in the best way possible!)
