Opuntia, often called the prickly pear cactus after their colorful and spiny pear shaped fruits, is a genus of closely related flowering cacti species native to the Americas. With a bit of preparation, both the fruits and green cactus paddles (called nopales in Mexico) are edible. The cactus is an important part of the legend of the founding of the city of Tenochtitlan, inspiring the Mexican coat of arms which prominently displays such a cactus. Tenochtitlan quickly became the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, and one of the largest in the world at the time.
