Electrostatic Discharge

(Published on 14. April 2024, 11:30 by Allagem)

I'm taking a short break from slingshots this week to post a puzzle that I am quite proud of. This puzzle was at least partially inspired by Crosswalk by zetamath, a brilliant puzzle that convinced me that Nabner lines have great potential as a mainstream variant. Outside of the single usage in Borromean Rings, I have never set a puzzle with region sum lines. However, the thought of mixing region sum lines and nabner lines just felt right somehow and I was inspired to mix these two constraints and see what I could create. I think the result is absolutely stunning both in terms of visuals and beautiful logic, and I hope you will agree!
I'll publish this puzzle as 4 stars under the assumption that most solvers haven't worked too much with nabner lines, but people more familiar with nabner lines will likely have an easier time. Feel free to rate its difficulty according to your experience. :)

Please enjoy my latest puzzle, Electrostatic Discharge!

Update: This puzzle was featured on Cracking the Cryptic! Watch Mark's solve of the puzzle here!

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Region Sum Lines: Box borders divide blue lines into segments with equal sums.

Nabner Lines: Digits on a gold line do not repeat and are not consecutive with any other digits on the line.

Lovely the way the constraints work together.

Trickier than it looks are first blush but really comes together at the end. Love the finish to this.

This puzzle would have been a lot easier if I didn't make arithmetic mistakes.

A fun and clean (while also pretty tight) solve overall! :)
[I actually didn't use the 2 cells nabner line in box 2 at all btw]

That just means you didn’t find the easiest path through the endgame ;) But yes, the 2-cell nabner in box 2 is indeed unnecessary for a unique solution, it just sets up a certain logic line. If people happen to find it, awesome. If not, that’s ok too. There’s multiple paths that finish up the puzzle. Thanks for the solve! :)
