Another “One of These Things”

(Published on 4. April 2024, 16:47 by Jrosas)

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Normal yin Yang rules apply. The entire grid can be divided into two regions of orthogonally adjacent cells with no 2x2 cell area entirely in either region.

“One of these things is not like the others” rule applies. One digit in each cage is in a different region than are all the others. The sum clue, if given, is the sum of only the “others.” Example: if a cage has a sum clue of 7 and the digits are 3, 4, and 5, the 3 and 4 sum to 7. The 5 is in one yin Yang region, the 3 and 4 are in the other region.

Digits do not repeat in cages

Black dots separate digits that are in a 1:2 ratio. All black dots are given.

Oh dear, I made this horribly difficult for myself by not reading the last sentence of the rules. It's a very bad habit! After almost 3 hours of struggling I had only one deadly pattern left when I finally saw the negative constraint :o Anyway, the setting is great, solving was terrible.

Hey “Sorry I’m late.” Don’t be sorry. Better late than never. I am glad this puzzle is still finding solvers. I cannot imagine how anyone would get anywhere close to solving it without the negative constraint. I’d love to see a video of that. And I think I saw your name solving another one of my puzzles. Thanks for that, and thanks for entering the solution code, because only about 1 in 3 solvers of my puzzles do that.

I'm not going to make a video, but if you seriously want to study my sad solve, here's the replay file for sudokupad: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1flA7MB3KK-8vJ3coH8cN0PUE5hGLAyJR/view?usp=drivesdk
I don't remember what desperate nonsense deductions I used three days ago, but I probably did quite a bit of bifurcation. And of course I could have made a false assumption too. But I did have just four cells unfilled, when I saw the negative constraint and hit my forehead... Thanks again for your wonderful puzzles!

Loved all the different logical deductions and interaction between the constraints. It was challenging and fun - thank you :-)

I am happy that people enjoy the way the constraints do that. I have another waiting to be released “Think Outside the Box” that I hope you enjoy. Circle sums constrained by thermometers and by what I believe is an original rule.
