X (Chaos Construction)

(Eingestellt am 11. April 2024, 07:00 Uhr von tallcat)

I really enjoyed setting my last Chaos Construction (Metope) and wanted to make another one. For this, I decided to solve some older Chaos Constructions with a view to re-using the rulesets. Here, I am using an Internal X-Sums rule that was used in excellent puzzles by Jovial and KNT. I also set myself a challenge of trying to be somewhat minimal in clues while still having a solid solve path. Happy solving!!

Chaos Construction: Place the digits 1 to 9 once each in every row, column, and region. Regions are orthogonally connected and must be located by the solver.

Internal X-Sums: A digit in a clued cell is an internal X-Sum clue. A digit X in a cell containing a number N in its top left corner indicates that cell sees X digits in its region (including itself) and that those digits sum to N (X counts to the sum also). For digit X in a cell with a ?, that cell sees X digits in its region (including itself). Region borders obstruct vision. Clued cells see orthogonally and not diagonally.

Can be solved online at Sudokupad (with answer check) or Penpa
(without answer check)

Lösungscode: Row 5 (left to right) using "-" (dash) to represent region borders.

Some really elegant steps here that made me feel blind as a bat once I found them. Well done and thanks

Very cool idea for the start and a very consistent solve (at least for me) later on. Great to see how much this concept can offer more :)

A bit outside my comfort zone difficulty wise, but always worth it if there is such an exellent chaos construction puzzle waiting.

Fantastic puzzle! There were some really clever deductions near the beginning to get the regions started, and it was a pretty consistent difficulty through most of the solve for me.

Seeing as the ? was causing confusion, I have clarified in the rules. I do find it amusing that Jovial and KNT didn't have such confusion for their puzzles...

@drbs, ? represent digit in that cell can see exactly X digits in the region.

Is it true that all the clues (N) must be unique? If not, I don't see the purpose of the question marks.

EDIT: A digit X in a cell with a ? sees X digits in the region including itself as correctly stated by BBB

@Briks, from what I've learned, yes it does

Does X count to the sum?

EDIT: Playmaker is correct - as in ‘normal’ X-sums. I’ve edited the rules to make it clear.
