How do you cut your sandwich?

(Published on 29. February 2024, 04:18 by EPH)

How do you cut your sandwich?

Standard sudoku rules apply: each row, column, and 3x3 box must contain all the digits from 1 to 9.

Clues outside the grid are sandwich clues with a twist: in the appropriate row or column, digits between the 1 and the 9 must sum to the value of the clue. In addition, for each diagonal from the clue (of length at least 2), the digits between the first instance of each of 1 and 9 (as seen from the clue) must sum to the value of the clue.

Clever. Once I finally figured out who I kept breaking the puzzle, I laughed out loud!

For the 7 clue, there is a diagonal starting in r1c3 going left, and a diagonal starting from r1c5 going right. Sorry for the confusion.

It's not clear to me what the diagonals are. EG for the 7 above col 4: do both diagonals start from R1C4 or is there a diagonal going to left on R1C3 and another to the right on R1C5?

I was totally confused at first. How on earth could you ever decide which crust is which?! It took me a while to get the answer, and then I had to laugh. What a funny idea! Thank you so much for setting this cool puzzle.
