Killer Octopus

(Published on 12. February 2024, 14:22 by ThePedallingPianist)

I made this as a practice puzzle for Orla the Octopus, but it's ended up being quite a challenge of a puzzle in its own right! The break in is certainly harder, but don't be too put off - unlike Orla, this one gets significantly easier as it goes along!

Both of these have been good fun to explore and to set and I recommend trying both. I reckon this "Octopus" ruleset has a lot of legs...

Other Octopus Puzzles:
- Orla The Octopus (Zipper, Ziffer, Mulziplier and Zivider tentacles)
- Killer Octopus (Same Difference tentacles)
- TENtacles (Ten Line tentacles, puzzle by Marty Sears)
- Squidshoku (Entropic and Modular tentacles)

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Digits in a cage must sum to the given total.

Octopus rules apply. I.e. draw 4 lines that must:
- not cross or overlap anywhere except r5c5, where they all intersect;
- have 180-degree rotational symmetry around r5c5;
- visit exactly 2 cells on the edge of the grid, which are the beginning and end of the line;
- all be the same length (in no. of cells passed through).

The 4 lines are "Same Difference" lines. I.e pairs of adjacent digits on a line must all have the same difference, though this difference may be different for different lines.

Fantastic puzzle. Almost gave up trying to find the break-in, but after that the logic flowed smoothly.

We want more octopi! Very fun puzzle, a little tricky with the break in and then the rest unfolded pretty smoothly.

This was amaaazing. I think I even preferred this a little bit more than the other octopus puzzle, as this ruleset felt a bit cleaner and simpler and thus a bit more elegant. The placement of the 5 cage is sheer genius and the work it does is remarkable. Still can't believe only 4 small cages are needed to make this grid have a unique solution. It's a miracle I tells ya

That was amazing! It felt like so little information given in the clues, yet it unfolded beautifully. Very original feeling logic too. Thank you!

a much easier version with surprisingly different logic. Very elegant.
