The Great Overlap

(Eingestellt am 2. Februar 2024, 16:27 Uhr von filuta)

Huge thanks to chameleon, The Book Wyrm and wisty for the time they spent testing this or the previous version of this puzzle.

Have fun!

Rules:

-Cover the whole grid with (possibly partially or completely overlapping) orthogonally connected areas. No two areas of a same size can intersect or share an edge.
-For each area write its size in every cell contained in that area. Some of those numbers are already given.
-If a cell is contained in more than one area, then the largest number contained in that cell must be equal to the sum of the remaining numbers in that cell.

I'm lost for words.
It's so cool that you manage to bring us such magical creations from wherever in the stars only you can find them, over and over again. Thank you!

Last time I did a filuta puzzle was "Four Houses of Kropki" and I can't believe I've been missing out on gems like this. This ruleset is... how do I say it... it's completely unhinged, but in a good way. The type of insanity never seen before.

I'll be going through your profile in the upcoming weeks, starting with the unrated puzzles. No doubt I'll be seeing more puzzles just like this one :)

oh, I hope you will enjoy the other ones too!

That was some mathemagic! Very clever ruleset, with some really cool connectivity logic! Thanks for creating/discovering this beautiful puzzle :-)

Amazing puzzle, highly enjoyable mental workout :)

Compared with the 8x8 or "reeinventing the wheel" puzzle this one is easier. I really love this beautiful strictly logical solving strategy, even when I dont't find it instantly!

Finally cracked the new version! Super cool!!! It was a joy to see this puzzle develop - your hard work shows and you are uniquely talented at crafting diabolical puzzles that initially seem so alien and bizarre at first but slowly reveal commonalities in our puzzle solving language behind the curtain.

Fantastic! A remarkable puzzle in so many ways. Elegant ruleset, a cascade of beautiful deductions, and a wonderfully clean solvepath. Not even very hard, although I did have a meltdown in the middle while overlooking a simple deduction for about four hours. True piece of art!

I am sure, all of us love to learn, understand and play with new, interesting rules.
But starting with a 5-star problem is very prohibitive for some of us. Maybe many of us.
Of course, you can ignore us and I know, I have no right to ask for anything only be happy with whatever you offer us, but if you would like to include us, mere mortals, you can make first a two-star puzzle (with an example), then a 3-star puzzle, then a 4-star puzzle, and after this foreplay, we will happily welcome your big thing :)
..........
I'm really not sure how to respond to such a comment, but I will try.

(as a looong side note) I accept and understand that puzzles based on existing constraints/developing new ones are preferred by many solvers/creators. I personally just like to make ones with one off ideas without any expectation of a follow up. Not so many puzzles are nowadays created that way, which I find a bit sad, but once again, it's not really why I make them, I just do what I like.

But given that I surely give a serious thought to how to present the puzzle and most of the time include a solvable example puzzle, occasionally even more than one. In this particular case I found it very difficult to do that, the only thing I am able to offer you is the following proof of concept puzzle I made first - http://tinyurl.com/24uaew8e. It has the same break in and easier mid solve, is still at least 4/5 though. I am honestly not sure if it makes the eventual solve of the larger one more or less difficult/enjoyable.

In any case I am happy you spend your time to share you thoughts with me and found interest in my puzzle. Lately I am actually preparing a puzzle pack of 2 to 4 star difficulty puzzles, maybe you will eventually find that one more appealing.

Thank you for your detailed answer and the other puzzle. I hope I did not offend you. I am happy you make puzzles for us :)

Enjoyed testing this; it's a very fun and inventive puzzle.

Pretty crazy ruleset with a lot of interesting deductions and things to discover. Rather tough, but definitely worth a try.
