Different Delights

(Published on 27. January 2024, 00:24 by ThePedallingPianist)

Marty Sears challenged me to set a puzzle using his "different difference" lines, and naturally I obliged, almost completing this in one evening. As well as being great fun, this setting experience also hammered home that I've developed a particular style, and this isn't it, so it was delightfully refreshing to try something - aptly - different!

So many of my puzzles require the solver to discover some kind of secret global property about the rules, whereas a puzzle like this is entirely focused on local deductions building on each other. There are many setters with far more prowess when it comes to this type of logic, not least Marty himself, but I'm still rather pleased with this relatively gentle sudoku. I hope you enjoy solving it as much as I enjoyed setting it!

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Fog of war: some of the grid is covered in fog. Enter correct digits to uncover more clues.

Different Difference lines: no pair of adjacent digits on a beige line may have the same difference. For example, if a line has a 3 and 5 next to each other, it may not also contain a 7 and a 9 next to each other.

X: digits separated by an X sum to 10.
Kropki: digits separated by a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio.

Not all possible Xs, black dots or difference lines are given. And thank goodness for that.

Solution code: Column 9 (far right) top to bottom

I have no idea how you manage such consistently excellent puzzle setting!

First time doing this kind of line variant but it worked beautifully! It was a relatively slow solve for me and I probably would’ve been stuck on where to look without the help of the fog revealing clues bit by bit but smarter brains than mine would get on with this very well. Really nice puzzle!

Wow! Firstly, It made me so happy to see someone else make a puzzle using Different Difference lines - I'm really rather fond of them and they are indeed very fun to set with.

But this solve path was absolute class. You found some brilliant new bits of logic and beautiful sneaky bits. Loved box 8, and some of the triangular structures yielded more than one surprise.

Very chuffed to see an idea that came out of my head handled and developed with such love, care and expertise. Also wit, you made me laugh at one point.

And you caught me out with a few of my own tricks too, you bugger.

This was a lovely change of pace; I'm not used to getting to the end of one of your puzzles without at least once questioning my sanity! I must be missing something... is this part of some ARG I'll never figure out? or is there a hidden link in your puzzle that requires advanced cryptography to access?

Regardless, this is once again Sudoku at its finest. Thank you for the wonderful puzzle!
