Equality Cages 101: Introduction to Equality Cages

(Published on 31. October 2023, 18:47 by gUBBLOR)

The puzzle Low Tide by Schwupel introduced Equality Cages. I think it's a fantastic ruleset, but I haven't seen them elsewhere and decided to take matters in to my own hands by creating my first puzzle ever. My goal was to introduce the ruleset in a somewhat simple way, and hopefully that will cause more of these to pop up. If you enjoy Equality Cages and want a bigger challenge, definitely give Low Tide a go.

The next puzzle in the series:
Equality Cages 102: Renbanification

All my series:
Equality Cages
EquaLite Cages
Shifter Lines
Shifter Dots

Rules:
Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place the digits 1 through 9 in each empty cell. Digits must not repeat within the same row, column, or box.

Equality cages: Cages must have an equal number of low (1,2,3,4) and high (6,7,8,9) digits AND an equal number of even (2,4,6,8) and odd (1,3,7,9) digits. Equality cages can never contain 5. Digits may not repeat in a cage.

Kropki dots: A black dot between cells indicates cell values with a 2:1 ratio. A white dot between cells indicates cells with consecutive values. Not all dots are shown.

XV: Adjacent cells connected with an X must sum to 10. Adjacent cells connected with a V must sum to 5. Not all X's or V's are shown.

I had not seen the equality cages rule before this puzzle. This is quite the fun rule. Nice job on setting this puzzle! Every clue lead nicely, the flow was great, and it wasn't tedious. Truly a fun puzzle. Thanks for setting and sharing. Great work on puzzle #1!

Very fun ruleset and a well-crafted puzzle to highlight some useful logic. I only wish that we had a way to more easily visually distinguish these from traditional cages (though I could imagine someone coming up with a nightmare where some cages are traditional and some are equality and it is a necessary condition for the solve to figure out which is which).

Thank you so much, considering it's my first puzzle I'm quite happy with the result. It's funny you say that, because I had 2 normal killer cages in the first version to get to a unique solution, but it was suggested I replace those with XV or kropki dots in order to not make the puzzle too confusing, and that gave me the same idea for a potential nightmare to create in the future.
