☾ 10-Suȵ Loop ☼

(Published on 28. October 2023, 08:05 by ElChiglia)

---- RULES ----

Normal Sudoku rules apply: Fill the grid with digits 1 to 9 appearing once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.

Moon-or-Sun Loop: Draw a single non-intersecting loop into the grid by connecting centers of orthogonally adjacent cells. The loop must fulfill the following rules:
  • The loop enters every cage exactly once.
  • Within each cage, the loop must pass through exactly one moon or sun, and in adjacent cages along the loop, the symbol it passes through must be different.
  • In each cage, the respective loop segment must be a valid 10-line, i.e., it consists of one or more contiguous groups of cells, each of which sums to 10. These groups of cells cannot overlap.
Moons and Suns: Each symbol stands for a different polarity, i.e., low (1234) or high (6789). Each cell containing that symbol must have the respective polarity. Which symbol refers to which polarity must be determined by the solver.

Killer Cages: Digits within cages cannot repeat.

Very fun! If there was a way to quickly deduce the polarity without bifurcating until a breakage, I didn't see it. However, once I established the polarity, everything else more or less progressively fell into place.

I haven't done enough of this kind of puzzle to really feel like i understood _why_ things were playing out the way they did, but it was nice to see :)

Fantastic ruleset and a very fun solve :)

I've solved all your loops so far (bar foggy loop, which wasn't out when I started the series), and this is hands down my favourite. I misread the rules and tried to solve for odd-even parity rather than high low and wasted a lot of time getting some way through that, then spotted my mistake but somehow managed to think that I was trying to solve for lines in cells being multiples of 10 rather than consecutive groups of 10. It became so much easier when I read and understood the rules correctly!

I think this one especially is a really beautiful construction with a lovely path to solve; everything flows really nicely when you figure out what combinations you can have!

This is brilliant! Felt stuck for 30 minutes in the middle of the solve but thankfully I can find the trick, and then the solve is smooth.
