Sassafras Sandwiches

(Published on 10. September 2023, 04:04 by RockyRoer)

Walking with my 6-year-old we found a Sassafras tree -- common here in Michigan. Her friends call them 'ghost leaves' but I can tell them by their leaves of distinctively 1, 2, or 3 lobes each. So, here's a puzzle where all the 1's, 2's, and 3's are given, but not really. Have fun! Should be 1, 2, or most likely 3-star difficulty. (Ok, maybe four... depending on your comfort level with outies and sandwiches...)

The Rules:

  1. Normal sudoku rules apply.
  2. [Sassafras]Digits in green circles are either 1's, 2's, or 3's.
  3. [Sandwich]Clues outside the grid, which must be determined, are sandwich clues, indicating the sum of the digits sandwiched between the 1's and 9's in that row or column. When one circle is shown, the clue must be 1, 2, or 3. When two circles are shown, the possibilities are 11, 12, 13, 21, 22, 23, 31, 32 or 33. Nothing is known about the rows/columns where no clue is shown.

undeniably brilliant. the fact that you pretty much have to make a paper list of sandwich/totals/outies indicates that 3 is a fair difficulty rating

Brilliant puzzle! Don't think it is hard. It is at most 2/5 difficulties for me.
