On The Bottom Shelf (Nabner Modifier Sudoku)

(Published on 9. September 2023, 00:24 by Silverstep)

Another Nabner puzzle, this time featuring a variant (adder cells) I invented. Thanks to henrypijames, Fool on Hill, rockratzero, and cornish-john for testing.

Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place a digit from 1 to 9 in every cell such that no digits repeat in a row, column, or bold 3x3 box.
  • Normal Renban variant rules apply. Cells along the purple line contain a non-repeating set of consecutive values in any order.
  • The gold lines are Nabner lines. Two cells that share a Nabner line can have neither the same value nor consecutive values.
  • Adder Cells: In each row, column, and box is an "adder" cell. Each "adder" increases the values of orthogonally adjacent cells by N, where N is the digit in the adder cell. Adder cells DO NOT increase themselves. Each digit appears in exactly one adder.

Very clever. I say this on a lot of puzzles, but I can't even begin to imagine how you set something like this.

Gorgeous puzzle. I don't think I've had to do this much back-tracking on a puzzle in at least 2 years, but it was all worth it. Hope it gets an established rating soon! Thanks to Fool on Hill for recommending.

That was a wild ride! Fascinating the way it held together so tightly.

*very* hard for me but just as beautiful. I feel like the things I learned always came back and the modifier was trippy in a way that worked beautifully with nabners. Amazing job!

This is the next dimension of the nabner concept with a mind bending modifier rule. Brilliant puzzle with new ideas.

This puzzle, with its 11-cell nabner line (!) and novel modifier rule is beautifully constructed, and well worth the effort.
