Summer Snakes

(Published on 25. August 2023, 22:28 by yttrio)

This puzzle is in the same vein as my previous collab puzzle Silent Snakes, but uses region sum lines instead of whisper lines.

Rules:

Normal Sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1 to 9 in every row, column, and 3x3 box.

Each circle is an endpoint of a nonbranching one-cell-wide snake of orthogonally connected cells, and each circle represents a different snake. No single snake can take up a full 2x2 square within the grid, and different snakes cannot share the same cell. Also, each snake must visit at least two 3x3 boxes within the grid.

The digit in each circle is the length of the corresponding snake (e.g., a 5 in the circle means that the snake must be 5 cells long).

Each snake also acts as a region sum line. Digits on each snake must sum to the same total in each 3x3 box the snake enters. If a snake enters a box multiple times, each instance is calculated separately.

Thanks @yttrio! That was very satisfying indeed. I got stuck several times, but that wasn't the puzzle's fault as the way on, when I finally spotted it, was always fair and usually involved some beautiful logic.
