Little Killer, Massive Damage (feat. Kropkis)

(Published on 6. July 2023, 13:26 by gdc)

This puzzle is a case study on how much damage an "average" diagonal can do in terms of disambiguation. You'll get your answer at the end of the solve!

Play online: CTC, Sudokulab

Rules

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place the digits 1 through 9 in each empty cell. Digits must not repeat within the same row, column, or box.
  • Digits must not repeat in cells that are a chess king's move apart.
  • A black dot between cells indicates cell values with a 2:1 ratio. Not all dots are necessarily shown.
  • Digits along diagonals pointed to by arrows outside the grid must sum to the number listed. Digits may repeat along the diagonal if otherwise allowed by normal Sudoku rules.

Hints

  • Reduce evey cell on the diagonal to three or less options before you try any arithmatic.
  • The king's move constraint prevents R3C6 and R4C7 to be the same number. Conclude from this that R3C6 cannot be 5,7 or 9.

Solution code: Row 1 without spaces (9 digits)

Great! Not sure I could have done it with coloring with actual colors, letters make it so much easier for me to rationalize

Doing Sudokus after a long gap. And yours is the one I re-started with. Loved the puzzle, took longer to solve than I like to admit :)

Loved this. Was definitely quite tricky but doesn't require anything too advanced. Loved how it finished. Great puzzle

Hey gdc! Just FYI, the CTC rules mention white Kropki dots, which don't appear to be in the puzzle. Anyway, going to have a crack at this one later :)

Edit: Just solved, very enjoyable puzzle with a little sting in the tail. Great setting!

> Thanks! That "sting" also took my breath when I first saw it
> The rules texts are auto-generated, I'll make a move later and change them.

Wow, 90m of headache xD Jocking, thanks gdc, I don’t know how I got to the end eheh I think that I had to guess between two numbers at some point: the first path was wrong, the second one brought me to the end. It was super fun, the King’s moves are crucial: brilliant!
> thanks! the second hint was meant to address that tricky ending.

Nice puzzle. I am colorblind, so I always have to be super careful with these types of puzzles. Easy to mix and match colors!
- Thanks. The CTC webapp allows you to customize color palettes.
- Have you tried that?
