Information Paradox (Advanced Black Hole)

(Eingestellt am 6. Mai 2023, 01:38 Uhr von heliopolix )

This is the second puzzle in the advanced black hole series. It shares the standard black hole ruleset and adds Schrödinger cells. It continues to explore the black and white hole rules.

Thanks to cornishjohn, Clocksmith, Darth Paradox, joshjohnson, and Scojo, and for testing and feedback.

Completing this puzzle involves: shading some cells, and doing killer cage, little killer, and hole sandwich sum logic with double-value, zero-value, and multi-digit cells.

Rules:

  • Schrödinger Sudoku: Place the digits 0-9 once each in every row, column, and box. Two of the digits will have to share a Schrödinger Cell. Each row, column and box contains exactly one Schrödinger Cell. For the purposes of the clues in this grid, Schrödinger Cells have a value equal to the sum of their digits.
  • Black Holes (Nullifiers): Place nine black holes, one in each row, column, and box. Digits may not repeat on black holes. For the purposes of the clues in this grid, black holes have a value of zero.
  • White Holes (Doublers): Place nine white holes, one in each row, column, and box. Digits may not repeat on white holes. For the purposes of the clues in this grid, white holes double the value of a cell.
  • White holes and black holes never share the same cell.
  • Killer Cages: Digits in cages cannot repeat (though values can). Values within a cage sum to the clue in the top left. A killer cage must contain an equal number of black and white holes, but that number may be zero.
  • Teleporting Little Killers: Clues outside the grid with arrows are teleporting little killers. They give the sum of digits along a diagonally-traveling path starting in the cell pointed at by an arrow. This path only ends when it reaches an edge of the grid. When the path enters a black hole cell it teleports to the white hole cell with the same digit maintaining the direction of travel of the original path and including the value of both holes in its sum. The path must visit the same number of black and white holes, but that number may be zero.
  • A black hole with two digits creates two paths - sum each path separately. An infinite little killer may not visit a white hole first.
  • Hole Sandwiches: Clues outside the grid without arrows give the sum of the digits between black and white holes in the indicated row or column, not including the values of the black and white holes in the sum.

This is a piece of art! A 2 hour long journey and I only discovered why it is called "information paradox" midway through.

It's really cute how the rules synergize with each other. If a cage total is too small it could be either because of a zero OR because of a nuller, and if it's too big it could be a Schroedinger or a doubler.

For the visit-equal-amount-of rule, I like to think of it as "Little killers may only visit a doubler by teleporting from its corresponding nuller. Little killers cannot enter a doubler directly." It's a bit more intuitive this way

Stunning puzzle. Going into it, I didn't believe I could do it. After 300 minutes over multiple days, I successfully solved the puzzle. I highly recommend it to everyone after solving the previous black and white hole puzzles!

One of the best puzzles I've ever solved! It's a complex variation on an already complicated black hole ruleset, but solving the others in this series should prepare you to tackle this puzzle, and all the rules complement each other beautifully if you can get your head around them. Not many puzzles have gotten me as excited about the way certain sums resolve as this puzzle. It's just a perfectly executed idea. Great job!
