Tunnel Vision (Fillomino Myopia)

(Published on 2. May 2023, 09:00 by Agent)

It's been a while since I posted a new puzzle, I've spent less time recently on puzzles for a variety of reasons. But I have a couple of ideas in the backlog and hoping to share them in the near future. This week's puzzle is a Fillomino and Myopia hybrid, the concept was originally inspired from Pentopia where instead of identifying pentominoes, arrows in the grid point to the nearest N-ominoes of an arbitrary size. I hope you will enjoy!

Rules

  • Divide the grid into orthogonally connected regions such that no two regions of the same size share an edge, and enter a number into each cell equal to the size of its region.
  • Consider N the number in the top-left corner of a cell with arrows. Arrows indicate all the directions (up, down, left, and right) where the nearest occurrence(s) of N are located. The number placed in that cell indicates the distance to the first occurrence of N in the indicated direction(s).
E.g. in the example puzzle, the 2 in R4C2 places a 3 in R2C2. Conversely R3C2, R4C1, R4C34 and R56C2 cannot be 3s.

Example Puzzle (6x6)

Main Puzzle: Tunnel Vision (12x12)

Solution code: Enter the numbers in the two main diagonals: top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left.

If N is the number in the corner of a box, can that box have N in it as its number in the solution?

Also, is there any a priori restriction on how large the numbers in the solution can be?

-- @arrrgh, there is no restriction on how large a number can be, and having cell containing the number in its corner is not explicitly forbidden by the rules.

Very enjoyable thanks, and surprisingly constrained and hence approachable.

Took me a while to understand the rules and why you insisted on "all" the directions, but once I did, the logic flowed so well, until those 2 last clues that were just an amazing way to end this puzzle ! Thanks :)

This puzzle looked daunting at first glance, but once I spotted the break-in, the rest of the puzzle flowed beautifully.

I misunderstood the rule at first (didn't realise a min of 2 meant the digit couldn't be 1 away in another direction for example) but once I realised that the puzzle was very smooth. Laughed out loud at the ending!

A true love letter to fillomino aficionado, what a surprisingly smooth solve with such a brilliant ending, I definitely chuckled at that part x)
(how the hell did you discover that lol)

A must have for all puzzle lovers. I have started with a lot of question marks above my head and ended with a fantastic journey. :D

I was genuinely surprised by how smooth and approachable this solve was after finding the break-in! And I don't mean that in a bad way; fillomino hybrids on this site just have a habit of RKO'ing my brain out of nowhere.

Awesome puzzle, especially the ending! The logic in this one reminded me a lot of your Distant Relatives Fillomino.
