Spiral Fillodoku (Spiral Galaxy, Fillomino, Killer sudoku hybrid)

(Published on 29. March 2023, 21:25 by AnalyticalNinja )

I've been wanting to make this puzzle combination for a while and finally found a good way to do so, hopefully you enjoy it!

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply.
Fillomino: Divide the grid into colored regions, so that no two orthogonally adjacent regions have the same size.
Spiral Galaxy: The regions must be rotationally symmetrical, but have no pre-defined centers of rotational symmetry.
Killer: Digits may not repeat in a region, and regions with a small number clue sum to the number indicated.
(Not all number clues are given, and they DON'T have to be in the top, leftmost cell of their region.)

I created a smaller 6x6 example puzzle to showcase the logic. The first image shows an empty and solved version of the 6x6 example puzzle, and if you'd like to attempt that version first, you can do so with F-Puzzles or CTC (SudokuPad).

The second image shows the starting grid for the full 9x9 version of Spiral Fillodoku and it can be played with F-Puzzles or CTC (SudokuPad).

Solution code: Column 2 of the completed sudoku followed by the region sizes of the cells in column 2. (18 digits total)

Great idea, nice implementation. Or, may be, nice idea and great implementation!

Excellent puzzle, obviously. I found it a good one to sit with & revisit a little at a time over a few days. Might have been unpleasant if I tried to power through all at once, but this way it was rather relaxing.

Enjoyed that a lot, thanks :)

While it's implied, it'd be better for the rules to specify that each region consist of orthogonally connected cells.

Absolutely loved it. You've done it again Ninja.

An exceptional puzzle. Made great use of the combined rules and left me with a lovely sense of having mastered them. There was a moment typical of the Ninja that seemed impossible to resolve and when I finally saw the way through it finished the whole puzzle in masterful style. Thanks!
