Rock and a Hard Place (Chaos Construction)

(Published on 15. March 2023, 09:00 by tallcat)

I've always found Chaos Constructions challenging as a solver. Combined with the fact that I wanted an interesting ruleset, this probably accounts for why it's taken me so long to set one. I'm very pleased with how this ultimately turned out as I was able to minimize the parts of CCs that I usually struggle with. I also need to give a shout out to KNT for encouragement and feedback. Happy solving!

As a note, I found this hard to gauge on the difficulty front and ultimately listed this as 4/5 but i consider this to be in comparison to other CC puzzles, rather than compared to a 4/5 variant sudoku. Please keep that in mind!

Chaos Construction: Place the digits 1 to 9 once each in every row, column, and region. Regions are orthogonally connected and must be located by the solver.

Between Lines: Digits on lines between filled circles must have values strictly between those in circles. Digits may repeat on lines if allowed by other rules. Circle digits also give the number of orthogonally visible cells (including itself) in its region i.e. a 9 circle will see all the cells in its region. Note, region borders obstruct vision.

Can be solved online at f-puzzles or CTC

Solution code: Row 7 (left to right) and column 6 (top to bottom). 18 digits, no spaces.

Excellent puzzle ! As stated by others, the late midsolve gave me to think about a lot and change perspective as clues were running out pretty quickly. Thanks :)

Started out pretty approachable, but goodness it got real hard real fast :) Thanks for the puzzle!

This puzzle ended up being one of the more satisfying solves when I realized that things were unwinding and I actually did it correctly. There were a number of very tricky mid-solve logic steps to work through, and while it took me almost 4 hours to solve, I am extremely thrilled to have completed it at all.

Do region borders obstruct vision? It's not explicitly stated either way.

REPLY: They do. I have amended rules to reflect this.

I think mid-solve is interesting too.

The first time I solved this, it flowed super smoothly. I solved it a second time to help a friend and strangely enough I had more trouble with it the second time around! Really great puzzle regardless, congrats on setting a CC :)

Brilliant puzzle, as usual, from @tallcat! Start was smooth but became very hard in the middle. Really glad that I managed to solve it. Such tight lines, most of them. Thanks for sharing.

I think the difficulty should be 5 stars because of the later stages. Great puzzle.

Fantastic (yet very tricky) puzzle! I actually enjoyed how the opening sequence went out, but the mid solve and the parts toward the end took me longer than expected x)

Agreed with woofer - lovely opening sequence!
