Even Lighting

(Published on 15. February 2023, 23:02 by Jay Dyer)

I made this puzzle in response to a prompt on my Patreon page, asking for an akari hybrid puzzle. I realised while making it that akari is surprisingly difficult to do hybrids with, at least by my usual approaches, because the coupling between light placement and shading geometry is actually quite weak. I'm pretty pleased with how this turned out though.

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Some cells (to be located by the solver) are doublers, and have a value equal to double their digit.
  • The even-valued cells (including doublers) form a single orthogonally connected area. Every even cell must see at least one doubler in a straight line horizontally or vertically (odd-valued cells block the view). Doublers must not see each other.
  • The values of cells in a cage sum to the total in the corner of the cage (if given). Digits may not repeat in a cage (though values may repeat).

Solve in f-puzzles or Sudokupad.

Solution code: Row 5 and column 9.

This is a fantastic puzzle as expected from Jay Dyer. Got stuck for a long time at one juncture but the interplay of 6, 7 and 8 in box 8 which transmitted to boxes 7 and 9, which I did not see readily, showed the rest of the way. Thanks a lot for sharing.

It turns out that there can be such a combination...

It's very hard, very challenging, but also very interesting, and it's also full of sense of accomplishment after taking 77 minutes to make it.

All in all, a great puzzle!
