Assassins

(Published on 18. January 2023, 07:56 by MicroStudy)

This puzzle makes use of a new constraint I came up with: Contract Killer Cages. I also included a link below to a tutorial puzzle to help with understanding the new ruleset.

Rules

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Fog of War: The grid is covered mostly in darkness. Placing correct digits in cells will illuminate all adjacent cells around them.
  • Killer Cages: Digits inside Killer Cages may not repeat, and their values sum to the total indicated in the top left corner, if given.
  • Arrows: Values along an arrow must sum to the value in the circle. All arrow sums are contained in 1 cell.

New Constraint Rules

  • Contract Killer Cages: Every Killer Cage in the grid is also a valid Contract Killer Cage. Contract Killer cages must have EXACTLY TWO non-zero values. The top-left-most value in a Contract Killer cage points to a row in the grid, and the bottom-right-most value points to a column.
  • The order priority is given to the topmost value. For example, if R7C3 and R8C2 are valid non-zero cells in the same Contract Killer Cage, R7C3 would count as the top-left-most value and would therefore give the row coordinates.
  • The row and column coordinates from a Contract Killer cage combine to target a single cell in the grid. The said cell is "assassinated" and its value is multiplied by 0.
  • No two Contract Killer cages may target the same cell.
  • All cells with a value of 0 are counted as assassinated and must have a corresponding Contract Killer cage.

IMPORTANT: Please note that "digits" mean the actual number in the cell, and "values" mean their numerical value, which may or may not be affected by other cells.

Really trippy concept, but in this case it's not that hard to learn some good tricks in here. Very rewarding and fascinating puzzle!

Really fun puzzle! The possibility of cells getting assassinated and contributing zeros to the clues almost makes it feel like there are too many variables to solve without making assumptions, but the logic is air-tight once you realize the implications of the ruleset. Nice setting! :)

This was very fun from start to finish.
The constraint is very cool and fog worked very well with it.
Excellent setting!

Once you have a grasp on the ruleset, everything flows so smoothly! Such a great puzzle

Smooth logic. Difficult rule to understand at first but it works properly in both directions creating nice flows of thinking. I would like to see the interaction of assassins with other restrictions like thermos or German whispers

Stunning puzzle. I was so pleased when I realised... the obvious

Daunting ruleset to understand at first but its a lot of fun once you do and the puzzle starts flowing smoothly. Nice puzzle!
