Fire Watchers

(Published on 15. March 2022, 23:09 by Angelo)

This puzzle was the result of a collaboration with AFrayedKnot. It combines thermometers with watchtowers.

Ruleset:

  1. Normal sudoku rules apply.
  2. Numbers on a thermometer must strictly increase as they move away from the bulb.
  3. Each circle represents a watchtower of height X, where X is the digit placed in that circle. Each watchtower must see exactly X cells (including itself) in its row and column combined. Watchtowers cannot see digits larger than their own height, nor past them. (e.g. A watchtower of height 5 would see a 3 behind a 4, but not behind a 6).
  4. Not all watchtowers are given, but cells with squares must not be watchtowers and they must therefore see more or less than X cells.

Brilliant construction, really love how the geometry played at the beginning, then the stuff in the top right area, well done both of you!

From the four watchtower sudokus, this was my favorite (although the other three also receive 5* for beauty!) since peeling off the possibilities took me the longest here. Very clever puzzle with excellent choices of the given clues and thermos! Well done!
Also this one deserves far more solves and red stars...

Entertaining. Once the main structure in place, no hassle to fill the grid. -> rather 3* difficulty.

First! Loved it. The symmetry, the flow... I'm still impressed with how perfect those watchtowers work together with so many different constraints.
