How To Build A Snowman

(Published on 4. December 2021, 01:15 by Nordy)

How To Build A Snowman:

  • Winter Rules apply: As temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, so have the normal Sudoku digits. Place the digits 0 to 8 in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • Stack two (or more) large balls of snow: digits along arrows sum to the digit in the corresponding circle.
  • Place a nose in the center of the top ball: digits along thermometers must increase from the bulb end.
  • Add eyes and buttons: cells separated by a white dot contain consecutive digits, and cells separated by a black dot contain digits in a ratio of 2:1.
  • Attach some arms: green lines are German Whispers lines - adjacent digits along these lines must have a difference of 5 or more.
  • Done! You now have your own unique snowman: digits in cells separated by a snowflake (blue star) form a unique domino - those digits cannot appear next to each other orthogonally anywhere else in the grid. (CTC link uses diamonds instead of stars).

Replace "snowman" with "snowperson" or "snowcreature" for additional creative applications.

The unique clue was surprisingly powerful in this one.

Came here after the feature tonight on CTC - and yes I solved it first, then watched the video :) Anyway - 0-8 puzzles crash my brain, especially with German Whisper lines. I was sitting on some very easy information for a good 10 minutes until I saw it. Also that unique dominoes worked wonders. Still a Great puzzle two years later! Thanks!

A very visually pleasing puzzle with a fun theme and some very satisfying logic. Beginner-intermediate difficulty with a fun and easy start, and a more challenging finish for me. A great puzzle to cozy up to with a warm cup of tea. 10/10

Wow, what a fun puzzle with beautiful artwork! Even the rules section was fun. I loved the winter rules, which really messed with my head. I got stuck for ages because I didn't realise quite how powerful the negative constraint was, so I've put 3 stars, but I can see why most gave it 2.

It was really hard for me to get my head around the last rule.
Nice puzzle :)

Thank you all for the nice comments! I’m always skeptical of trying to create images with constraints (seems better to let interesting logic dictate constraint placement), but I was very happy with how this turned out. Happy holidays

Neat holiday puzzle, and the theme didn't feel forced! Had some cool logic with the unique dominos too.

It felt weird putting 0's into the grid. Nonetheless, the puzzle was quite smooth and enjoyable. Thank you for this festive creation!
