Definitions:

Let a cycle be the horizontal path taken along a single row in the grid starting at the digit A in column X, then looking at the digit B in column A, then digit C in column B etc until returning back to the original digit.

Let the order of a cycle be the number of unique digits in a cycle.

Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Normal thermo rules apply. Digits along thermometers strictly increase starting from the bulb.
  • Cyclometers: In addition to normal thermo rules, the orders of cycles strictly increase along thermometers.

Example:

See below for an example thermo that is valid given this additional constraint. Cycles are illustrated in red, and note that their orders strictly increase along the bulb (1 -> 3 - > 5)

Solution code: Row 7 + Row 8 (18 digits, no spaces)

[SirSchmmopy] - Thank you so much! I didn't know that was a thing and was actually working on my own variation with this concept combined with X sums, but it's taking a while to get a solve path i'm happy with. I'll definitely give these puzzles a shot as i'm sure it they provide me with some inspiration.

I concur with the others. Really nice “pointing” type of variation. I’m curious how difficult it would be without some high digit thermos allowing certain deductions. That being said, this is the first of your cycle puzzles I’ve solved and I look forward to trying the others!
