Whisper of the killer snake

(Published on 27. August 2021, 18:07 by Joseph nehme)

This puzzle is the fourth in my crazy build your own cages puzzles after “When X sums meet Killer”, “Ultimate Mashup” and “Building the Unknown” which were all featured on CTC.

Rules:

- Normal Sudoku rules apply.

- Normal Killer Sudoku rules apply: The digits inside a cage sum to the total indicated on the top left corner of the cage. Digits cannot repeat inside cages.

- The killer cages themselves must be deduced and drawn by the solver. Each cage contains a German Whispers line which spans all of its cells and starts or ends at the cage sum cell (Cages are minimum 2 cells long). The line can move horizontally or vertically through cells, but not diagonally. The line must not branch. Cages can have any shape. Note: The killer cage total must always be at the upper left corner, i.e. standard killer clue placement. (Topmost prioritized over leftmost)

- Adjacent numbers on a German Whispers line must have a difference of 5 or greater.

- Cages may not Overlap.

@marcmees Thank you for trying it out :)

with the clarification of the rule, I guess the difficulty of 4* is a bit overrated. the given hints don't allow that many possibilities to create a whisperline. nice and easy.

Added a sentence to make rules more clear

Well, then you need to state that clearly in the rules. Or else someone who's smarter than me would consider the midway possibilities right away and not find the break-in.

@henrypijames Wow, thank you for your lovely comment. Glad you liked it. And yes the cell of the cage sum is always the start or end of the GW line. :)

Incredibly subtle and intricate, just wow! Broke it many times, and it was often very hard to find the mistake.

Advice for fellow solvers: Make double, triple, quadruple *sure* that you've found *all* the German Whisper constellations for each killer cage sum. Because more likely than not, you've missed something.

Need to see this on CTC. One of the best and most entertaining puzzles of recent months!

@henrypijames Well some snakes do touch themselves. The snakes here (Lines) are of those types, aka they can touch themselves :)

What a great puzzle title!

Though it begs the question: Is a snake still a snake if it's allowed to touch itself? ;)
