Paulas Geheimschrift-Rundweg-Puzzle

Paula loves jigsaw puzzles. Because she also likes Slitherlink puzzles, she got herself a jigsaw puzzle with the mysterious name "Geheimschrift-Rundweg-Puzzle" (translated something like "Secret Code-Slitherlink-Jigsaw Puzzle") in the internet.
But once opened, she dropped it in shock: Instead of an image, there are only four different symbols on the pieces!
Can you help her to put the 16 pieces together again and solve the puzzle?
Solution code: Sizes of areas outside the loop, sorted increasing. X for areas of size at least 15.

Sehr gut geeignet zum gemeinsamen Rätseln während der Bahnheimfahrt von einer Rätselmeisterschaft. Vor allem mit Rätselfreunden, die gute Ideen für mögliche Lösungsschritte haben :-).

This was amazing! I cannot express just how much I enjoyed it. The best slitherlink variant I've played ever. It looks intimidating at first, but then every step is very straightforwardly logical. The whole puzzle ends up taking a lot of total solve time (which is reflected in "hard" rating), but it's well worth getting through it. Brilliant!

Ich hatte es schon beim ersten Versuch richtig gepuzzelt. Hatte aber beim Slitherlink anscheinend häufig falsche Logik angewandt. Beim 2ten Versuch hat es endlich funktioniert. Hat zwar lange gedauert, hat aber richtig spaß gemacht ;-)

Tolle Konstuktion! Hat mich einige Zeit (und mehrere Versuche) beschäftigt. Faszinierend, wie sich allmählich alles ergibt!

(But as a hint: Don't think to complicated!)
(And another hint: If you know how to solve a slitherlink, it should be pretty clear what to do)
