Cave / Nurikabe

(Published on 1. November 2020, 16:50 by Jesper)

Colour each square either grey or blue, so that the resulting grid is both a valid cave puzzle solution and a valid nurikabe solution:

Cave puzzle: grey squares are walls; blue squares are cave (air); numbers in blue squares must be valid cave clues

Nurikabe: grey squares are land (part of islands); blue squares are rivers; numbers in grey squares must be valid nurikabe clues; unlike standard nurikabe, not each island needs to have a number clue

Detailed rules

- All blue squares must be orthogonally connected, but no 2x2 area may be completely blue
- An orthogonally connected area of grey squares is an island; islands with only one square are allowed
- Each island must connect orthogonally to an edge
- Islands may touch diagonally (in cases where this would not contradict the other rules), but not orthogonally
- An island may contain at most one number clue, and if an island contains a number clue, it must be equal to the size (number of squares) of the island
- A number in a blue square indicates how many blue squares can be seen from it orthogonally (including the square itself), given that grey squares obstruct the view

Example (6x6):

Penpa: Cave Nurikabe

The puzzle follows:

-------

Solution code: The sizes of all islands, clockwise in order of attachment to the edge, starting top left (for the 6x6 example, the code would be 85114)

Super fun, thanks. Nothing is incredibly difficult, there are just a lot of deductions to be made. Every time I thought I had run out of ideas I'd remember another one of the rules and it would help me on my way.

Wow ! So fun to try something different once in a while. And what a lovely archipel that was ! The variety of logic that you managed to pour into each part of the grid is amazing. It felt like solving 4 different puzzles and getting a clue out of each solve to be able to reach the final code. A very nice ride all the way. Thanks+++

I definitely found this far more brutal than I should have- but a great hybrid. Thank you for another great puzzle, Jesper! Going through old puzzles of yours is always a pleasure for me. I will be sad when there are none left to do.
