3-clue Battlefield Sudoku

(Eingestellt am 18. Juni 2020, 15:11 Uhr von Nylimb)

This is based on the recent Battlefield Sudoku puzzles introduced by Big Tiger in Battlefield Sudoku #1 and Battlefield Sudoku #2.

Fill the grid with numbers from 1 to 9, so that every row, column, and 3x3 box contains each of the 9 numbers exactly once. Consider the first X cells and the last Y cells of a row or column where X is the number in the first cell and Y is the number in the last cell. A clue outside the grid gives the sum of the digits where these groups overlap, or the sum of the digits in the gap between the groups if they don't overlap.

A cell is colored red if it's part of an overlap in its row and in its column. It's green if it's part of a gap in its row and in its column. Otherwise it's white.

I wondered if such a puzzle exists without numeric clues, using only the colored cells in the grid. That appears to be impossible, but in this puzzle there are only 3 numeric clues. I don't know if that can be reduced to 2 or 1.

For anyone who has trouble distinguishing between the colors of the shaded squares, the red ones form the 10-cell triangle in the top right part of the grid, and the green ones form two 3-cell triangles below and to the left of that.

The puzzle is available on Penpa and on the CtC-app.

Lösungscode: Row 6 and column 6.

SudokuPad version: https://sudokupad.app/oyht0bdsqu (no answer check)

@glum_hippo: Thanks for the link. I've added one, with answer check, to the description. I really should do the same for my other puzzles...

It took me FOREVER to look at the right cell, but once I did the solution was very nice.

@Big Tiger: I don't know what it takes to create a new icon for puzzles, but anyone can add a text tag. The "Create a New Puzzle" page says "please try to use german words for the tags", so maybe "Schlachtfeld" would be appropriate. (That's from Google Translate.) If you decide to add a new tag to your puzzles, I'll add it to mine too.

Meanwhile, if you want to see a list of all Battlefield Sudokos on this site, you can use this link, from the Advanced Search page:

https://logic-masters.de/Raetselportal/Suche/erweitert.php?skname=x&suchtext=battlefield

(It just looks for puzzles with "battlefield" in the name; if there are others with different names it won't find them.)

I'm thinking of setting up a blog (if I had the means I'd make it a magazine) of all the Battlefield Sudukos as people make them, so that they're all in one convenient place. I wonder how many we'd have to make before it became an Icon on this site, ha ha.

@Big Tiger: (from Nylimb, 8. July 2020) DiMono has added 3 tags to some Battlefield Sudokus to make them easier to find, so I've added them to mine also. You might want to do the same.

Okay, got it. I was too busy doing math to notice that some numbers were ready to be placed by Normal Sudoku principles.

I dunno, can't say I really "enjoyed" it. I don't feel satisfied, just ... done. I can see where attempting to set a puzzle with only 3 lines of battle probably roused your creative enthusiasm though, for sure.

One of the best "battlefields" :)

@Big Tiger: I thought I was taking poetic license; a really accurate name would be something like "Battlefield sudoku with 3 numeric clues and 16 color clues".

One advantage of this name is that it challenges someone to create a "2-clue Battlefield Sudoku".

3-Clue is so prosaic. How about "Night Battle" or something? lol
