For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a unique Sudoku variant every week.
Distance Sums

I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

Pretty cool! Didn't take me long at all, though I suspect there's still more interesting logic available to this variant that I didn't need to find for this particular puzzle.

Fantastic puzzle. The distance sum constraint is very interesting. Thank you, Richard.

Thank you very much for creating and sharing this lovely (and fairly easy) puzzle. So this interesting constraint is one of your own inventions, isn’t it?

Reply: well, more or less. I have a (paper) solved puzzle here in my pile without a name, ID or author that uses quite similar rules, but just off. There the count of cells in the direction is one less than the number of steps. I can't find the puzzle in the portal anymore, so I can't enter the code. But that one inspired my a bit to make my own version.
BTW: did you miss SVS #458? That one can use a number of extra solves. ;)
Done! Thank you for reminding me of that miss.
BTW 2: Sorry for my late reply. This year the traditional busy season is even busier than normal, so I have hardly time to look in the portal...
Never mind. Thank you so much for your answer!

Great fun once my coffee started working and I could finally count correctly, haha!
