Dutch Flat Mates: Shikaku

(Published on 28. January 2026, 07:00 by Flinty)

Previous Dutch Flat Mate Puzzles
This has been a weekly series since '18 Oct 23'. Here is a spreadsheet link for all the previous puzzles in the series, which also has a few teasers for upcoming constraints/guest setters in the series (subject to change).

This alternative link offers a limited LMD search for Dutch Flat Mates.

Special Thanks
Big love to damo_89. This puzzle began its life as his next guest spot for the series, but he couldn't quite get a final, solvable and unique, draft he was satisfied with. He was happy for me to take over the setting, and some of Damo's logical ideas live on in this version.

Initial Setter Difficulty: 3 / 5

Normal Sudoku rules apply
Place the digits 1-9 so that they do not repeat in any row, column, or 3x3 box.

Dutch Flats
Every 5 in the grid must have a '1' directly above it or a '9' directly below it. It may have both, but it doesn't need both.

Shikaku
Divide the grid into rectangles such that each rectangle contains exactly one circle. The digit in the circle is the size of the rectangle. Digits may not repeat in a rectangle.

Hint to start

The first available rectangle is a fully boxed in 1x1. Flat Mates limit some circles options, particularlty in Box 5. Throughout the puzzle, consider what cells can only be reached by a limited number of circles.

Solution code: Column 9 Digits

Great puzzle with an engaging solve throughout. If I was more familiar with shikaku puzzles, this would probably be a 2-star, but I struggles for 52 minutes, so I rated 3-star difficulty. Loved it!
