Abstract Snakes

(Published on 31. December 2025, 12:20 by logicanimal)

Rules: Aqre variant
1. Shade some cells to form a single connected component. Given numbers indicate how many cells are shaded within that region.
2. There cannot be four or more consecutive shaded or unshaded cells in a row, both horizontally and vertically.
3. Each unshaded connected component must either be a single cell (an egg) or a snake. A snake is an orthogonally connected path of length 2 or more that never touches itself, not even diagonally.
4. If there are n>0 snakes of a certain length, there cannot be n snakes of a different length.

You can solve the puzzle here.

This is one of 12 disjoint puzzles I made this year with varying styles/difficulties themed around snakes and 2025.
Enjoy!

Solution code: For rows 2, 5, and 12, for every unshaded cell, enter the length of the snake/egg it belongs to.

Was fun for me. If I didn't overlook something, I didn't need intuition, may be some short branchings. Also the (surely limited) use of rule 4 was nice.

Rules #1-3 made for a fun concept, but rule #4 was more based on intuition than fun logic for me
