Déjà Vu

(Published on 31. July 2025, 11:00 by Scojo)

This is a series of five 6x6 sudokus, which each explore a different modifier type. A link to the next puzzle will be in the SudokuPad solution message for each puzzle. Each puzzle features some selection of the following rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1-6 once each in every row, column, and 2x3 box.
  • Modifiers: Place one Modifier in every row, column, and box. Each Modifier must contain a different digit. The value of a Modifier is modified according to the rules of each individual puzzle. The value of a non-Modifier is the digit in its cell.
  • Region Sum Line: Box borders divide a blue line into segments with equal sums of values.
  • Renban: Values along a pink line must form a set of non-repeating consecutive values in any order.
  • Nabner: No values anywhere on a yellow line may be the same or consecutive.
  • Thermo: Values along a thermometer must increase from bulb to tip.
  • Kropki: Values separated by a white dot are consecutive. Values separated by a black dot are in a 2:1 ratio.
  • XV: Values separated by a V sum to 5. Values separated by an X sum to 10.
  • Quadruple: The values listed in a white circle must appear at least once in the four cells surrounding the circle.

One of the greatest setters, Marty, has high praise for this puzzle in the very first comment. So there is nothing left for the rest of us to say!

Scojo, take a bow!

Brilliant setting - how to combine all those rules and have all the fun deductions and quirks along the way ... a complete joy to solve

One of the great achievements in setting. If there was such a thing as the Sudoku Hall of Fame, this would be in it.

Wonderful mini-pack, masterfully executed! Nice deductions all around, non-trivial break-ins in later puzzles. Two disguising as a two was a small disappointment, I anticipated six disguising as a six. But jokes aside, this is a great construction. Thank you for this setting, Scojo!

Brilliant series. First few were relatively easy but the last one was a bit tricky. Loved them. Thanks!

This is an amazing series I‘d never have thought to be possible. And while the first puzzle is solved quickly, the second one is simply brilliant. Thanks a lot for sharing these with us all, Scojo.

One of the best things I've seen in the sudoku world in a long time! Fantastic idea, lovely execution. Can be a bit tough, but totally fair at all times. If you're reading this comment, please, give this pack a go!

Very neat idea and incredible execution. I like the choice of modifiers used and how they start with common ones and then gradually move towards more unusual/challenging versions.

As marty already said, the last one is just mind-blowingly clever.

Extraordinary bit of work. Playing this pack leaves you constantly thinking "how has he done this?" Brilliant concept and response to the mini-pack prompt.

The puzzles escalate nicely in difficulty, with a particularly fiendish but beautiful break-in for puzzle 5. The overall journey through the pack, and the things you learn along the way, are lovely. I particularly like the aesthetics of the 4th puzzle.
