ON EDGE: Blue & Pink

(Published on 18. February 2025, 15:00 by marty_sears)

This is the second episode of my series about EDGELINES. Each episode contains 3 parts; two 6x6 mini puzzles, finishing with a 9x9.

RULES (for part A):

  • Normal 6x6 sudoku rules apply.
  • Each spot along a coloured edgeline has a value, found by performing a calculation using the two digits it sits between:
  • SPOT RULES:

  • Sum (+) spots: The value of a spot with a plus sign equals the sum of the two digits it sits between.
  • Difference (-) spots: The value of a spot with a minus sign equals the larger digit minus the smaller digit.
  • Product (x) spots: The value of a spot with a multiplication sign equals the product of the two digits.
  • Ratio ( / ) spots: The value of a spot with a forward slash equals the larger digit divided by the smaller digit. (The value will always be an exact integer.)
  • LINE TYPES:

  • Blue lines are 'region sum edgelines'. Box borders divide a blue line into segments with an equal total of spot values on each segment (although individual spot values may vary.) The region sum must be determined for each blue line.
  • Please leave a comment if you enjoy :)

Solution code: Column 9 in the 9x9 grid, reading downwards

Excellent, but with Marty, what else is new? :)

Whew, finally got this one on my umpteenth attempt! I love these edgelines, they give a whole new dimension to existing line types. But they can sure be tricky. (For me, this is much more than a 3 star puzzle.)

What a lovely series! The edge lines obviously start to bring in some arithmetic, but often also get me thinking about primes and prime factorizations and more number theory. So much fun!

Wow, what a thread. Kept you calculating and wondering all the way to the end. I did have to draw myself a little 2D table to help after realising there weren't loads of options on the right unlike the left.

Beautiful stuff. But pretty challenging for me in the end. Felt great when the Thermo filled in, just to get reminded that it wouldn't finish that easy. Very kind of you to put some learning steps in before the 9x9

Classic! There were some beautiful AHA moments in that 9x9

The whole thing about how the 2 pink Ratio lines and the pink product line in the left side of the puzzle interacted and influenced each other was magnificent.

I'm definitely signing up to the theory that Finkz's walls will end up as edgelines in the future...

Another lovely one. Really great how you are expanding on your idea here.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of these! The only time I truly got stuck is when I read a pink line as a blue line in the third puzzle and was certain I didn't have enough information.

Another beautiful combination of variant sudoku and a little fun math. Thank you, Marty!

Just another excellent puzzle, thanks Marty. I really appreciate the way you are always bringing in new variations and rule sets, but also tailor your puzzles to explain and demonstrate them in an approachable way. These edgelines are certainly bringing some interesting new logic into play.
