Turning Fever

(Published on 6. February 2025, 15:50 by DubiousMobius)

This puzzle was created for Scojo's weekly setting prompt. This time the theme was thermometers. I decided to take the opportunity to revisit ideas from this old puzzle, which also involved drawing thermometers with unusual movement constraints. Big thanks to ChinStrap for help with rules and accessibility, and to blackjackfitz and the ctc discord for testing!

Rules:

Sudoku: Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and box

Turning Thermometers: Draw a set of 7 'turning thermometers' in the grid. Each thermometer must connect a large 'bulb' dot to a small 'tip' dot of the same color/pattern. The tip of the bulb in the lower left corner must be determined by the solver.

In order to be 'turning', the thermometers must change direction exactly as many times as the digit in their bulb. Thermometers can move diagonally but may not cross themselves or one another, and may not share cells. Digits along thermometers must get strictly larger as they travel from the large dot to the small dot.

Lovely puzzle! Clever rule use in a way that lead to very natural deductions, which can't have been easy to set.
