Fire Escape

(Published on 4. February 2025, 03:00 by XeonRisq)

This is a mashup of two constraints that chilly (Staircases) and myself (Rooftops) have been developing.
For puzzles that demonstrate the logic of these constraints please see the puzzles below:
Staircases : Staircases (Intro) ; Thousand Yard Stair
Rooftops : Rooftops (Intro) ; Skyline ; Partial Eclipse ; Detour
It will likely ease the difficulty of the solve if at least the intro puzzles are referenced to become familiarized with the constraints and the associated restrictions.
  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Entropic Lines : Any set of three sequential cells along a beige line must contain a low (123), middle (456), and high (789) digit.
  • Anti-Entropic Lines : Any set of three sequential cells along a blue line must NOT contain a low (123), middle (456), and high (789) digit.
  • Clues outside the grid represent either a Rooftop or Staircase clue, which is to be determined by the solver. If there are two clues on both sides of a row or column, there must be exactly one of each type of clue.
  • Staircases : A clue X outside the grid indicates that there exists a run of exactly X consecutive digits, ascending in the direction extending from the clue.
  • Rooftops : (Skyscraper hybrid)
Each digit in the grid represents the height of a building in its cell. Taller buildings obstruct the view of shorter building's rooftops behind them.
Clues outside the grid give the number of rooftops visible from the vantage point of the building in the first cell in the associated row or column. (not including itself)
(ie - A building of height 6 can only see the rooftops of buildings at height 5 or lower)

Brilliant as always! The interactions between the two constraints felt very natural. A highlight was the inconspicuous entropic line in c5. Thanks:)

Appreciate your feedback/kind words as always! While setting this one, that line was a fun addition to the solve path; it does alot more than you'd think, but not before the perfect timing!

Took a little while to wrap my head around the two new rules worked, and how they interacted with each other. Good fun once I did.

Thanks for giving this a try, and this type of comment is more and more familiar, but the same old constraints are just proving to be too boring for my setting tastes. Appreciate the solve and the pleasant feedback!
