Twisted

(Published on 4. February 2025, 10:13 by ThePedallingPianist)

This is my response to Scojo's setting prompt this week, which is to use external clues that usually act on rows and columns and apply them to diagonals. Ever the contrarian, I decided to rotate the grid by 45 degrees instead of the clues. Thank you to Justin (vitaminz) for testing!

Play on SudokuPad

SUDOKU:
• In each NxN grid, place the digits 1-N once in every row, column and box;
• In the slanted 6x6 grid, digits should be entered only in the middle of cells.

4x4 DISJOINT:
• A digit may not appear in the same position in multiple 4x4 grids.

X-SUM ARROWS:
• Each arrow contains a 2-digit number, with the 10s digit on the shaft and the 1s digit on the head;
• The number on an arrow gives the sum of the first X digits seen in a straight line in the indicated direction, where X is the first digit seen;
• Arrows only see cells that contain digits, i.e. blank spaces, such as those not belonging to any grid, are not seen.

Solution code: All 9 digits pointed at by the diagonal red arrow, in reading order (the direction of the arrow)

A lovely twisted puzzle. My neck hurts a little from tilting my head 45 degrees sideways, but other than that it was a great experience.

Really wild puzzle which is easier than it looks.

You've really upped your game when it comes to puzzle aesthetics. This grid is gorgeous (as is the logic, but as a ThePedallingPianist puzzle that's already par for the course).

Wow! Blown away. Had an absolute blast with this one. I'm very impressed with the concept, the execution, the design, the minimalism, etc etc etc. Aaaand somehow very approachable!

Not as twisted as Lorena's puzzles, but the concept is still just as brilliant.

Absolutely wonderful! Although I pity anyone who attempts to solve without the conflict checker.

Loved this! A classic piece of PedallingPianist craziness. Great concept, delivered with the utmost panache. Love the aesthetics, and the logical path itself was very satisfying and approachable (I was able to complete it without any hints or mistakes, which is a rare thing for me!)
