It's Orla 'Bout You

(Published on 9. January 2025, 15:54 by marty_sears)

A few months ago I made this birthday puzzle to celebrate the 1st birthday of ThePedallingPianist's daughter Orla. I never got round to publishing it at the time, but here it is... better late than never!

    Rules:

  • Mean Mini: Deduce which six digits from 1-9 are used in this puzzle, and fill the grid with them so that no digit repeats in any row, column or box.
  • O: The teal O is modular. Any 3 adjacent digits along this line must contain one digit from each of these sets: [147][258][369]
  • R: The red R is a parity line. Any 2 adjacent digits on this line have different parity.
  • L: The yellow L is entropic. Any 3 adjacent digits along this line must contain one digit from each of these sets: [123][456][789]
  • A: The green A is a German Whisper. Any 2 adjacent digits on this line must have a difference of at least 5.
  • Balloons: A balloon sits on a domino between two consecutive digits, and the string points towards the smaller digit. ALL POSSIBLE BALLOONS ARE GIVEN!
  • Please leave a comment if you enjoy :)

The break took me a second, but it was a beautiful tumble into a snappy finish. Marty, you've done it again!

I missed that balloons only sit on "dominos", which got me stuck on box two. Perhaps describing it as balloons sitting on "orthogonally adjacent cells" would have been preferable for new comers like myself. Lesson learned though!

I did the same as everyone else. Read the rules and its a lot easier

Nice one! Cute and appears to be simple, but I still got stuck in the endgame for a long time. (For a large part because I forgot about the negative constraint, like many others, I see...)

Simple but such a cute solve path, thanks,Marty.

Nice. Exactly the right amount of Modular-line-thinking my brain can accept.

Marty: Mine too! haha

I suspect more than a few people missed the negative constraint portion... I think this was lovely. Finding that right balance that would satisfy all boxes, lots of fun that. Thanks for the great puzzle!

Really helps if you read all the rules! (I spent ages wondering how to proceed before noticing the negative constraint)

Marty: I suspect you won't be the only one to do that ;)
