I really did begin my
Twitch stream on Friday with the intention of solving a small handful of approachable puzzles then getting an early night. But when
ChinStrap mentioned the idea of a Full Rank Tessellation puzzle, I simply had to explore the possibilities. With enormous help from several very clever people in chat, and in particular
juggler, the father of the Tessellation genre, what followed was a surprisingly smooth spontaneous setting process.
Check out the other puzzles in the
Tessellation series!
TESSELLATION
- Fill each cell with a digit from 1-9.
- Cells sharing an edge can't have the same digit.
- Each horizontal row and vertical column contains a non-repeating consecutive set of digits (like 23456) in any order.
FULL RANK
- A value in an external cell represents the rank of the number formed by reading the digits in the indicated 5-cell diagonal from that direction, where (1) is the lowest such row or column and (20) is the highest..
- If two ranks are tied, the value in both external cells is the lower of the two ranks being shared.
- For example, if the lowest four ranks are "12453", "13524", "13524" and "15432", the values in the relevant external cells would be (1), (2), (2) and (4) respectively.
Solution code: The 5-digit number that would be rank 1

That was really tough. Very satisfying once it started coming together.

Just had my best 2 hours in 2025 (so far)!! Most of that was spent on getting the idea of Full Rank, but once I got it everything flows so gracefully. I am totally amazed by the logic in this puzzle, thank you so much.

I've never liked Full Rank, but it is starting to grow on me now. Like a mold.

Thanks for the puzzle! always nice to have a big eureka moment when you spot the break in and from there it was a breeze.
Edit: watched the stream where you created the puzzle now, thanks for the insights on how these puzzles are created. At some point you mention how row 2 can be used, but then you end up doing a very complicated 'human' solve without using it ;-)

Exquisite puzzle. Lots of thinking up front but it resolves beautifully once the digits start to come.
